Windows Keyboard Shortcuts that I Use Daily
I’m a heavy laptop user; it’s my primary work machine and I’ve also got caught up in the latest craze – the subnotes or netbooks such as the Asus EeePC. This might just be my behavior, but when using a laptop I subconsciously avoid using the touchpad and instead rely on keyboard shortcuts to accomplish most routine tasks. I’ve been using Windows for what seems like forever and along the way, I’ve picked up a number of time saving keyboard shortcuts. I’ve taken for granted that most computer users know these already, but as I look around the office I see most everyone reaching for that mouse.
Master these simple shortcuts and I promise your efficiency will increase in no time!
- CTRL C / CTRL V: I’ve wrongly assumed that everyone knows this one – it’s definitely the most used and useful. CTRL C copies whatever is currently selected and CTRL V pastes the contents again.
- CTRL A: The copy and paste shortcuts work well with this one. CTRL A selects all.
- F2: Rename the active item in Explorer. Super handy when quickly naming Vacation photos.
- ALT TAB: Switch between open applications.
- SHIFT DEL: Delete the item without placing it in the Recycle Bin.
- CTRL P: Open the Print dialog.
- CTRL ESC: Display the Windows Start Menu – now obsolete because of the Windows Key but I’m a creature of habit.
- TAB: Move to the next control, useful on web forms.
- ALT F4: Close the active window.
- Spacebar: Check a checkbox or select an option if active on an option.
