whs_data_corruption Microsoft has updated the infamous KB #946676, better known as “when certain programs are used to edit or transfer files that are stored on a Windows Home Server-based computer that has more than one hard drive, the files may become corrupted” article. Rest assured though, the fix is in – in June! Before anyone begins the typical Microsoft tirades, the KB has a few suggestions on how to avoid the bug:

As a precautionary measure, users should use Windows Explorer or a command-line tool to copy files to and from the Windows Home Server-based computer. Do not use applications to directly edit or change files that are stored on the Windows Home Server-based computer.

And other gems such as:

Users may consider setting Shared Folders on Windows Home Server to read-only and avoid using media management programs, such as Windows Media Player, to import files to the home server.

So, make your file server a read-only repository or at the very least, don’t play music or videos through Microsoft’s own media player. Is that the solution you were waiting for since the bug was finally acknowledged by Microsoft months ago? That’s gold Jerry!
