Using iTunes With Other MP3 Players

iTunes is an acceptable music library manager and if you own an iPod, it’s arguably the best thing for you. It is hard to find fault with the yin and yang iTunes+iPod behemoth. But what if you wanted to use the functionality of iTunes to manager your music library, but you owned a Creative ZEN? Apple has led us all to believe that iTunes will only hold hands with the iPod - but this isn’t entirely the case. Enter iTunes Agent!

iTunes Agent is a free download that runs from your system tray, constantly looking for new USB devices that is recognizes as they are attched.  If successful, the MP3 player will show up as a psuedo-playlist device in iTunes where you can manager the contents of the music player in much the same way you would with a traditional iPod.  By default, iTunes Agent only recognizes three devices: a generic player, the Sony PSP, and the Sony Walkman Phone. However, new devices are simple to add. When you connect your device, Windows will assign a drive letter that shows up in Windows Explorer. If you browse that new drive letter, you should see a folder that clearly contains all the music files on the device. Passing this folder to the iTunes Agent preferences is basically all that needs to be done in order for your MP3 player to be recognized and syncing with iTunes.
