Using drfgui to Disable Vista’s Automatic Disk Defrag

Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented files on your hard drive so that the PC performs better and more efficiently. As disk fragmentation occurs over time, it progressively gets worse until the problem is addressed. Vista, as have previous versions of Windows, ships with a disk defrag utility. What’s important with Vista’s version is that it’s scheduled to run automatically behind the scenes, by default. This is a huge deal because defragging is one of those mundane chores that no one truly takes the time to perform – Vista solves this. At your discretion, it’s a fairly trivial method if you chose to disable this feature.

  1. Click Start and type dfrgui in the Start Search box.
  2. Uncheck the Run on a schedule box. Click OK.
