Useful Windows Media Center Keyboard Shortcuts

Even recent readers are likely aware of how much I`m a superfan when it comes to keyboard shortcuts. Most every application supports them and if you learn and remember just a few, your time spent with the application is made much more efficient. No one can argue this point yet the prevalence of the point and click mouse GUI makes it clear that us keyboarders are a dying breed. Having recently switched to the open source social media center Boxee – more on this at a later date – I had once again forgotten how dependent I had become on keyboard shortcuts. What? You didn`t realize Windows Media Center had shortcuts did you?

SimpleHelp has compiled a list of 42 useful keyboard shortcuts in Microsoft`s Media Center application. It would be redundant of me to list all the shortcuts but some of the more useful ones are:

  • CTRL+P to pause and SHIFT+CTRL+P to unpause
  • F8 to mute and F9/F10 for volume up/down
  • CTRL+G to jump to the Guide and CTRL+R to record the selected show.

I wouldn`t expect everyone to need all 42 but if you do use Media Center regularly it`s worth a gander. Media Center is about connecting you to your content, don`t get bogged down with a slow GUI interface – use the keyboard!
