Every shipping browser today includes the ability to set itself as the default browser for the current user. The default browser is what is launched any time a user clicks on a web link or otherwise opens a web document. It’s actually quite common nowadays for a user to use multiple browsers throughout the day – often by leveraging portable installations of the second browser. Briefly, a portable browser is one that can be self-contained to a single folder, either on the computer itself or a removable thumb drive, and does not write to the system or otherwise need administrative rights to install.

I’ve talked before on how to use a portable Firefox browser and the default Firefox browser at the same time, but what if you wish to set a portable browser as the default altogether?

Change Default Browser is a simple-interface utility that affords the ability to change the default browser to anything installed, including any defined portable browsers – such as Firefox, Chrome, or Opera. The application will automatically detect and set the path for the installed browsers; to leverage portable installs you must browse to the desired executable through the utility itself. From there it’s as simple as selecting the radio button next to the appropriate browser and clicking Set Default Browser.

Lastly, Change Default Browser can correct all sorts of registry related problems that pertain to the default browser setting - such as file associates and behavior when .htm or .html files are access through Windows Explorer.

Change Default Browser is compatible with all recent iterations of Windows including Windows 7 64 bit.
