The Carrier IQ controversy that’s been swirling the tech circles recently has left everyone rightfully a little paranoid. If you are unaware, Carrier IQ is a software service found on seemingly most smart phone devices that collects information about you the user – such things as the current location, phone calls, or even keystrokes – all under the guise of collecting performance metrics. If it sounds horrendous and scary all in the same breath – it’s because it is. While details are still ever-changing, suffice to say it’s probably something you want to rid from your iDevice as soon as possible. Apple has been quite forthcoming surrounding this scandal; going so far to say that Carrier IQ is not supported in iOS 5 and subsequent updates would see the software service completely jettisoned. It’s at this point I should say that the iPhone is NOT recording keystrokes, merely that the service has the capability. So, what do we do now? As the entire system is opt-in it’s not overly burdensome to change your mind and forgo the performance metrics collecting. On your iDevice launched the Settings app. Traverse to General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > Don’t Send.
