Opening Command Prompts Anywhere in Vista

I’ve got attachment issues. Sometimes I have problems just letting the past fade away all while embracing the future. This is a huge dilemma for someone in the tech industry; one who must be open to everything because things change and evolve rapidly. Today I’m referring to DOS and the command line, an environment that Microsoft has worked diligently in hiding with each iteration of Windows. I can’t let you go command line!

Working from the command line can be quicker and more efficient than your typical GUI, that’s true for Windows and, more admittedly so, Linux. There was a Power Toy available from Microsoft for XP that added an Open Command Window in a context sensitive right click menu throughout Windows. I have to believe this tool was requested and downloaded so frequently that Microsoft made it easy for us and included it with Vista from day one. Sure, it’s somewhat hidden, but at least it’s available to us. Here goes!

  1. Hold Shift and Right Click on the Desktop
  2. Hold Shift and Right Click on any Folder
  3. Hold Shift and Right Click inside any Folder
