“Open Command Window Here” Everywhere and Always in Vista

I’ve showed you before that holding Shift and right-clicking on your desktop or a folder reveals the Open Command Window Here menu item. But what if you always want that option available? You could glue your shift key down – but that might have other side effects. No, this is actually possible and it involves digging into our friend the Registry.

  1. Click Start and in the Start Search box type regedit.exe
  2. Traverse the Registry Editor navigation tree on the left hand side down to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\cmd.
  3. Delete the key titled Extended.
  4. Navigate the left hand tree again, but this time to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd.
  5. Again, Delete the key titled Extended.

The change will take effect immediately, no reboot necessary, no shift necessary.
