I’d just like to say I was hoping all the way up to now that this album would be totally different then the Long Road. I liked the Long Road, but was more on the disappointed side then the happy side of how the album turned out. Well, let me say, ATRR blew me the hell away. I wanted heavy and I got heavy. Even the ballads (which I am not a fan of as much) blew me away, and I like them quite a bit… with the exception of Far Away. It’s too slow for me.
Let me say two words… DANIEL ADAIR! I think he is a phenomenal drummer and he is the best thing that has happened to the band in their 10 year career. I liked Nik, but wasn’t really a huge fan of him. He was a good drummer, but he didn’t really impress me much on any of the songs. Daniel sure has a wicked style and the drums are way more intense and complex on this album. I’m still in shock. I knew the change wouldn’t have let me down. Dan was the best pick for the band.
Well… here is the best explanation and review of the album that I can give. I’ve only heard each song in its entirety two times or so… Here goes:
Follow You Home (8.5/10):
When I heard the previews and heard Dan break out with the double kick, I was already like… this is the album I have been waiting for. I was a little iffy on the vocals during the verse at first… I wasn’t sure if I liked the style or not, but thought it was cool either way. After hearing the full song, I’ve grown to like it. I think the chorus is absolutely wicked. Right when Chad started belting out, “Cause you’re my Mississippi Princess, you’re my California Queen…”, I was like, woah. This is one sweet tune. Billy’s back-up in the end fits in pretty well with the song. He sounds pretty cool in it. It’s a straight through rocker. A tune that is distinctively different from the rest of their older songs. Love it.
Fight For All The Wrong Reasons (9.5/10):
One of my favourite songs on the album. No questions asked. Solid verse, which I liked from the first time I’ve heard it on the previews page, then it goes straight into a kick ass chorus. Love the bridge when they break down into a little jam and Dan is given’er on the drums. There’s not much to talk about for this one, except that it just kicks royal ass.
Photograph (7/10):
This one is a given since it has been released for a while now. Decent tune, but it is just a typical Nickelback single. I still like it better than the others. But that will depend after I hear it overplayed 100 times.
Animals (9/10):
Haha, I wasn’t sure if I’d like the song that much because of the lyrics when I first saw them. I thought it would be more of a song for all of you girls that wanted to hear it so bad above the rest. Well, I was wrong. This is a pretty sweet ass tune. Wicked rocker… One of the heavier songs on the album I would say. I like the vocals a lot, and how Chad sings the song. I don’t wanna ruin it too much for all you girls Haha.
Savin’ Me (9/10):
Great ballad! I was very impressed from the first second the song started. I love the melody/lyrics of the verse the most, and the chorus is almost just as good. Love the piano and the strings. I thought it would be a little cheesy with the piano and strings, but it almost makes the song. Great, great song. Definately up there in my fav’s on the new album, and I’m not even a ballad fan! Way to go Timmy! Haha.
Far Away (3/10):
I’m not gonna really go into detail on this song. Probably the least favourite on the album. It is way too slow for my liking. I’m not saying its a brutal song, but It’s definately not for me. Find out for yourselves.
Next Contestant (7.5/10):
Hearing the verse on the previews, I was so disappointed with how they finally recorded the track compared to the live version from a few years ago. It’s basically what happened to ‘Do This Anymore’ on the Long Road. I still am not a huge fan of the verse, but I can say that the chorus is exactly like it was live, and the guitars are dropped down and it sounds wicked! The bridge they added that Dan mentioned a while ago is phenomenal. It’s nothing complicated, but I liked it quite a bit and start rockin’ out quite hard. It fits in well with the song and is a good part to rock out too. Overall, I am a bit happier with the turnout of the song and I am pretty much neutral/happy with the song. Could’ve been worse.
Side of a Bullet (8/10):
I didn’t expect it to only be 3 minutes long (on the short side), but it is quite the heavy tune. Heaviest on the album by far. The instruments in the song are really good, and Dimebag’s solo is pretty sweet. Wish it could be longer… but hey, it is an awesome last solo for the guy. (R.I.P.) Not one of my favourites, but definately right under. Maybe 4th or 5th favourite on the album.
If Everyone Cared (9/10):
Another great ballad. When I heard the piano part open the song up, I was like wow. I love it. I think that it is a phenomenal song. All I really have to say is, you have to hear it to believe it. It’s a great tune. This one and Savin’ Me totally blew me away in the terms of a Nickelback ballad. They are both some of my favourites by them so far. I’m impressed.
Someone That You’re With (5.5/10):
It’s not necissarily a ballad… nor a rocker. I’m not quite sure what it is. I am not sure if I like it or not. Not one of my favourites for sure. It has potential though after a few listens. It’s just different and it reminds me a lot of ‘Another Hole in the Head’. Not too much of a new style too it. I will let you guys decide before I go any further…
Rockstar (4/10):
Right from the get go when I saw the lyrics, I was like, I’m pretty sure I won’t be a fan of the song. It’s kind of a countryesque type of a song and the lyrics are kind of cheesy and not a huge fan. This one, ‘Someone That You’re With’ and ‘Far Away’ are my least favourites, and am not sure if I’m a fan. They COULD grow on me. We’ll see.
Overall… I think that this album is quite amazing. I’d say it is right up there with Silver Side Up, or possibly a bit more up. They still have to beat out The State, which probably will never happen… but, hey! I am very, very impressed with the guys. When I heard Dan describe the album as very diverse, and nothing like what they’ve ever done, I was kind of disappointed and thought I would not be too happy with the album. Well, I was wrong. It is quite diverse though. I like it though. Dan’s drumming… just amazing. I am in loss of words for it, so I will keep going. I think no one will really be disappointed with this album. Even for The State/Curb/SSU fans like myself, you will love it. I have been with the band since ‘98/’99, and I am still amazed with their talent.
