Moving on Up a Directory in Vista’s Explorer

By now you’ve probably a handful of annoyances introduced by Microsoft in Windows Vista brought about by them simply changing functionality for no apparent reason. Change is not always a good thing, even though I do like to live on the bleeding edge. One such major annoyance is a change made in Vista’s iteration of Explorer. Microsoft has chosen to remove the UP navigation button in Explorer. UP, for those that aren’t sure what they are missing out on, allows you to jump UP to the parent folder of your current folder.

Now, I can freely admit that the BACK button provides the desired effect a majority of the time, but in the same breath there are times that UP is more appropriate - such as when you are jumping between folders from the sidebar tree navigation. BACK just does not cut it!

However, much to my surprise from a misplaced keystroke, the functionality still exists, it’s just not present with a GUI button. Nonetheless, UP can be accessed by the keyboard shortcut Alt+Up Arrow Key. Microsoft, why do you taunt us so?
