To merge two folders with the same name in Windows one typically copy‘s and paste‘s one folder atop the other. Windows will prompt for confirmation before doing the actual merging of the folder contents. This is basic every day file and folder management interaction through Windows Explorer.
New to Vista, and subsequently Windows 7, is the capability to merge two folders that aren’t titled the same at the root folder level. Logically it makes sense that if you attempt to rename a folder to the same name as an existing folder Windows is going to complain. Instead, the rename actually triggers the merge dialog confirmation window.
Worth upgrading from XP for? Of course not, but it’s one of the little things that are rather clever and may come in handy on down the road. Not everything has to be so complicated!
