Improving Vista File Copying

Vista file copying performance is horrendous, even in the post Service Pack 1 world. There are a number of technical reasons as to why the actual file copy/move process was re-engineered in Vista – compared to XP – but at the end of the day it is all irrelevant because the actual process fails horribly as it is abysmally slow. Furthermore, Windows Explorer is merely a serviceable file manager; something we all put up with because it comes with Windows and it must be good right? I’m just as guilty as the next user on this. As it relates to file copy operations, Explorer lacks a few nice to have features. Would you be interested in pausing and resuming a copy and paste? That could come in handy. How often have you had a copy fail midway through the procedure? Explorer is unable to cope with any errors it may encounter and consequently bombs out, leaving you to fix the problem – if possible – and restart the entire operation. This is where TeraCopy comes in.

TeraCopy is a free download from Code Sector for all recent versions of Windows. The compact program integrates nicely with Explorer and provides robust set of features for your typical file operations.

  • Pause and Resume? Check
  • Error recovery? Check

TeraCopy is a godsend for those of us that have a small home network and find themselves constantly shuffling bits around between PCs. It greatly enhances the ability of Windows Explorer and proves to be a real time saver, literally.
