How in the Tech

Find, view, and delete your Flash-based cookies

Adobe Flash has been making quite the headlines as of late – mainly from the very public spat between Apple and Adobe. Quickly catching up, Apple refuses to allow the Flash technology on the iPhone and iPad because, in their words, they believe in open standards for the web. Apple has gone so far as to forbid the use of Flash, amongst other technologies, to aid in the cross-platform developing of applications for the mobile phone market. Developers of iPhone applications must agree to not utilize the Adobe Flash framework – simply. Adobe’s argument is that Apple is taking away the users freedom of choice and hindering the user’s experience on the web with devices that do not support Flash. While both sides have validity in their talking points, the battle has only just begun.

Returning back to our topic of discussion, specifically Flash, even the most novice of PC users are familiar with browser cookies. Cookies have the negative connotation of being used exclusively for privacy exploitation as they provide a means to track users activity within a website or across a network of websites. Cookies inherently aren’t all bad, but the privacy conscious individuals do have every reason to be bothered by their existence.

Users that care about this sort of thing are already blocking or periodically cleaning up their browser cookies. However, the browser is only one application that can create and store cookies. As you may have surmised, Adobe Flash does just the same. As a great many of the ads on the Internet today are Flash-based, you really aren’t doing an effective job of remaining private if you are merely deleting the browser cookies. Instead – you need to be more concerned with Flash!

FlashCookiesView is a portable application freely available from NirSoft. FlashCookiesView displays a listing of all the Flash cookies that reside on your system – irregardless of which browser you use. That is because, unlike browsers, all Flash cookies are written into the same location on your hard drive. FlashCookiesView allows you to quickly eradicate yourself of any and all Flash cookies and regain at least a bit of your privacy back.
