Filtering Google Search Results by Date

A Google search on all but the most obscure of terms return literally thousands of plausible results. There are times that this is very handy, and one of the reasons you likely turned to Google in the first place. But what if you were interested in results from a recent period? Time sensitive items, such as the latest Windows exploit, could be buried amongst other, long since patched, security vulnerabilities. As usual, Google has a solution to this but it’s not at all logical to find or utilize – another failure for their UI design team.

I would like to find information, perhaps a review or two, about the recently released version of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron. But, because I’m not up with the weird naming conventions used by Ubuntu, I don’t know it’s actually called “Hardy Heron.” Here’s how to use Google to filter your results.

  1. Go to Google.com and search for ubuntu
  2. In the Address bar of your browser, append &as_qdr=d to the URL.
  3. Notice the now available time period drop down available to the right of the search box.

Need an even more flexible time period? Just change the =d to d5 for 5 days, or w5 for five weeks, or y5 for 5 year, etc.
