If you’ve seen the television commercial awhile back detailing the new Windows 7 feature Aero Snap you probably already know whether it’s useful or not. For the unaware, Aero Snap causes application windows to snap and resize to form a vertical split-screen layout when they are dragged to either side of the screen. You could have Microsoft Word contained within the left half portion of your desktop while Wikipedia is referenced in the right half.

No question, the feature is actually highly useful during certain types of work and while it provides nothing you could have done previously by resizing windows manually – it’s ease and speed of use makes it compelling. However, it’s not for everyone and it’s effects can be quite jarring or cumbersome when it’s initiated on accident.

If the benefits of Aero Snap do not apply to you, it’s quite simple to disable the feature; that is once you’ve found the configuration location within Control Panel.

Somewhat illogical to me, Aero Snap is actually controlled from within the Ease of Access Center – specifically under Change how your mouse works.

Scroll down while looking for the section titled Make it easier to manage windows. Fill the check box next to Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen.
