System memory, or RAM, is so absurdly cheap today – often times it’s one of the easiest PC upgrades to do that actually affect your day to day performance. What you determined sufficient two years ago when you purchased your PC likely is different today. Software continues to evolve, or bloat as some may suggest, so throwing a few dollars at an elder PC may stave off the upgrade urge another year. Unfortunately, the age of your PC can also be the downfall when it comes time to upgrading it – do you still remember what memory type and speed it requires?

Here’s how to find out the answer to that question on a Windows PC.

One of the best applications to leverage is System Information for Windows – a utility that has sense gone commercial but the old version, build 0714, is still readily available through the developers website. SIW is a single executable that is supremely handy to have around, perhaps on a USB thumb drive tool kit. Even though the focus is on it’s ability to identify memory specifications, that remains just a very small part of the entire package. Yet it still remains small, tidy, and kept together.

When executing, SIW will display a device manager like tree system detailing various aspects of your system.

Logically, clicking the Memory header will reveal the specific details in the right-hand panel.

It’s pretty quick to see that the Maximum Capacity in this PC is 4GB spread across 2 Memory Slots. So, the maximum memory module size is 2GB.

Looking further, each available DIMM slot will be populated with information. Here we can see that this particular module is 1GB in size, of Memory Type DDR, and Speed of 667 Mhz. Any future memory upgrade will need to align with the type and speed specifications in order to maintain compatibility.

That’s pretty much the few bits of information necessary to know before proceeding on with the purchasing of additional memory. Now get shopping!
