Firefox devotees are intimately familiar with about:config – the down and dirty depths of the browsers configuration and preferences access portal. Odds are, and why Firefox is widely popular with the technorati, if you are wishing to tweak or change some subtle behavior the answer lies within about:config if it doesn’t already exist as an extension.
How do you know what each of the parameters control? On initial glance the entire underbelly can be quite intimidating. If you are a dedicated user, a time consuming process can be accomplished using Mozilla’s Knowledge Base but it requires a lot of copy, paste, search, rinse, repeat. For the lazy individuals, it should come as no surprise that their exists an extension that can not only automate the process, but take it one step further.
Prefsearch is a Firefox extension that alleviates the copy, paste, search of Mozilla’s KB but integrating directly to a Google search. Why is Google better than anything Mozilla’s official KB can produce? Often a Google search is going to return additional commentary or user experiences with the parameter in question. More detailed information is generally always welcome, especially with something as wild and woolly as Firefox’s about:config.
Open about:config from the Firefox address bar.
With the extension installed, right-click on any name and select Prefsearch.
The Google search results will then be displayed that relate to the parameter in question.
