Even light readers of How in the TECH know that I am a keyboard fanatic. Anything you can do in a traditional point and click GUI you can often do faster with a key combination. Everyone is aware of CTRL+C to copy and CTRL+V to paste. As I do a fair bit of work within Windows Explorer I was disappointed to find that Microsoft has decided that something as simple as creating a new folder is not worthy of it’s own keyboard shortcut. Instead, your two options is either through the File Menu or right clicking within Explorer and going to New->Folder.
Perhaps you don’t value this niche efficiency as much as I – that’s fine. But if you do, I sought out a solution to the problem. bxNewFolder is a free Windows utility that does just one thing – it maps the F12 key to creating a new folder from within Windows Explorer. That’s all it does! It is so simple that it doesn’t even provide any customizing to which keyboard shortcut you’d like. That’s fine by me though, it’s light and unobtrusive and does it’s sole function well. bxNewFolder is from BAxBEx Software, a German company, but the utility is available in English when you install it. One word of warning, on my Vista machine I had to run the installer with administrative rights – the installer will not automatically prompt you to do this like most modern installers nowadays.
