Migrating files from older installations of Windows to more recent versions is not without it’s headaches. One of the more problematic situations that can occur is a confusion over file and folder access rights between Windows versions. Moving an entire folder from one installation to a second is not always as simple as a copy/paste or cut/paste.

Access rights, specifically ownership and not directly read/write permissions, can become disassociated as the ownership account doesn’t exist in the new landing spot. While this is not the normal behavior, nevertheless it can and does happen. One such option available to you at this point is to access the folder Properties via a right-click.

There then exists a Security tab where Advanced security settings can be applied – this is where you would change ownership to your new user account.

Unfortunately this process isn’t exactly straight-forward and obvious – certainly not to the same level as changing read or write permissions on a file.

Take Ownership is a free portable utility that immensely simplifies the changing of ownership process by providing a means through a single right-click context menu item. Initial execution provides just an Install or Uninstall button that registers the desired shell extension within Windows.

As a portable application, it can be executed and toggled on and off on an as needed basis. Realistically you probably aren’t going to require the functionality often so easy removal is greatly appreciated. Once installed, right-click on the folder in question and choose Take Ownership. Trivial now, isn’t it?
