Doom, the game that defined the first-person shoot-’em-up category, turned 13 yesterday. The game was made available to the public, via an FTP site, on 10 December 1993.
While not the first first-person shooter, that being Wolfenstein 3D - also by id Software, it’s widely accepted as defining the FPS genre we know today. Ushering in the immersion of 3D graphics and network multiplayer gaming, the PC platform would never be the same again. Secondly, it introduced the concept of shareware to the masses. Me - and does this make me feel old - snagged a copy from the local BBS.
Next thing you know, it’ll be asking for the keys to the car.
